Over the past decade, the number of students taking AP exams has nearly doubled. Student participation in the Advanced Placement program has increased in every subject across every demographic. Simply put, students are taking more AP exams in an effort to prepare for and gain admission to selective colleges. According to the College Board, “a broader, more diverse group of students has benefited from expanded access to Advanced Placement. Since 2003, there has been a 7.9 point increase in the percentage of U.S. public high school graduates scoring a 3 or higher on an AP Exam, with 17 states exceeding the national average for this percentage change.” AP courses not only provide students with a more rigorous curriculum, but they allow students the potential to earn college credits.
